PREFACE
This book “Gender, School and Society” deals with the issues such as gender discrimination, concept & history of gender, the role of society in gender discrimination and how education helps in removing such discrimination. It has been seen that the factors like son preference, fear of dowry, fear related with old age (who will take care), the trends of nuclear families, higher unemployment rates etc. are responsible for this kind of discrimination. The detailed mentioned facts in this book will help the readers and listeners to draw their attention towards a realistic truth of realizing the negative features of gender discrimination. It is true that gender discrimination which is deep rooted down in its soil and cannot be annihilated easily. But through this book, a rudimentary effort have been made in this direction by explaining the welfare measures for women like spread of education, proper distribution of health services, government’s plans and policies for uplifting the women etc. It has been seen that the most of the literature reflects male chauvinism whereas female’s role seems to be limited when it is compared with male. So text books and curricula failed to address the issues of gender equality. In this book these all issues have been taken up because India has a vision to be recognized as progressive & democratic society.
