About the Book
The quality of life of infants and young children, as opposed to where survival is becoming increasingly important. Most developing countries hence experienced dramatic decreases in their infant and under 5 mortality rates over the last three decades. As greater number of children survive, it becomes critical to pay closer attention to children’s ability to develop their full physical and mental potentials. This will in turn value important consequences in adult life.
Child growth and development is internationally recognised as the best global indicator of physical well-being in children because poor feeding practices in both quantity and quality-and infectious, or more often a combination of the two, are major factors that affect physical growth and mental development in children.
The text of this book focuses on six major domain of child development-emotional, social, physical, cognitive, language and personality-that are readily observable. This book is primarily designed to assist teacher, teacher educators and also childhood educators who teach Pre-schoolers. This book can also be used in such programmes by the teacher assistant teachers who want to learn more about children in order to make individual learning plans, as well as for making assessments of individual children for programmed development.
Although the text is not directed all parents, parents may find some of the application pertinent to their role as their child’s first teacher. Another population that will benefit from the book is Pre-school teachers or college students who are in the process of becoming professional educators. Additionally, teacher educators might use this as a text for college course work, and trainers might use it as a resource.
I hope that this book will be useful to advocates of child development at the local state and national level including university students (undergoing pre-service teacher training programme and researchers in child development and other associated areas. I hope that the publication of this book will also encourage research in area of child development.
